The following are some sample computer crime and/or computer forensics job descriptions. If you have one that is not included, please forward it to the webmaster

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

1. Conducts examinations of computers and media generated by computers to develop evidence as an expert in the specialty area of forensic computer science.

2. Uses experience and knowledge of a wide variety of advanced computer technologies and theories to conduct analysis of submitted evidence.

3. Receives, inventories, and signs for physical evidence submitted for examination.

4 .Reviews laboratory requests and determines the type of examination needed.

5. In data recovery cases, determines the most appropriate method of protecting original evidence and recovering deleted, erased, hidden and encrypted data.

6. With other forensic scientists and examiners, identifies and recommends methods and procedures for preservation, evidence recovery, and presentation of computer evidence.

7. Performs related duties as required by management to meet the needs of the City.

8. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances, and acts accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for the safety of self, others, materials, and equipment. Uses all required safety equipment.

Generally, duties and responsibilities are listed from most to least critical or time consuming. REQUIREMENTS: Successful completion of a full four-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor’s or higher degree that included 30 semester hours in a combination of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. Experience with networking environments including Novell and Microsoft Windows NT. Professional training of computer investigation techniques, application, and legal aspects is highly desired. Ability to independently conduct comprehensive analysis in all types of forensic microcomputer and computer media searches and examinations. Knowledge of computer science and laws related to computer evidence recovery as well as procedures for the collection, preservation and presentation of computer evidence. Skilled in the application of computer science to recover data which has been deleted/erased, fragmented, hidden, or encrypted from data storage devices. Demonstrated ability to evaluate and maintain hardware and software necessary for the performance of computer related investigations. Ongoing knowledge of state-of-the-art computer hardware and software technology which impact computer related investigations. Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing. Twenty-four hour per day availability to respond to crime scenes to assist in identifying, securing, documenting, and seizing high technology evidence. Valid Colorado driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record. Acceptable background information, including criminal history. Must be willing to submit to security check and pass polygraph prior to hire.

COMPUTER CRIME INVESTIGATOR
POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Training/experience/liaison

Be expert in computer crime investigation, media analysis, intrusion investigation, etc.

Minimum requirements:

initial courses to establish recognized training baseline

follow-on activities including continuing education, proficiency training.

maintain professional liaison and membership/activity in professional organizations for cross-feed of technical information and also for follow-on training.

Assistance

Assist law enforcement agencies in legal preparation of search warrants, subpoenas, etc. to properly obtain all relevant electronic media as evidence.

Provide on-call response as required when digital equipment is discovered in a search warrant.

Provide guidance/assistance in evaluating and investigating cases where it is suspected/known that a penetration was attempted or made of a law enforcement computer system.

Evidence Handling

Properly collect, preserve, transport, store evidence which will require analysis.

Release this evidence to investigating law enforcement agency when examination is completed and material is no longer required at the computer crime lab.

Analyses

Conduct analysis/retrieval services (generally in the lab, although some activities/cases will require this to occur on-site for an extended period of time) for seized electronic media.

This encompasses an initial examination (for tactical intelligence purposes with feedback to law enforcement) followed by an in-depth examination as legally required for the specific case.

Requires frequent interface with the investigating officer(s) and possible review of the case material.

This is a highly technical area that requires working on hardware in seized computer systems to enable information retrieval, breaking passwords, finding hidden or otherwise "invisible" information on the media.

Very detailed procedures must be followed for a successful examination.

Reporting

Write report of investigative services provided. Report covers field as well as lab activities.

Testimony

Testify in criminal and civil court, administrative boards, and/or provide depositions when and where required on results of seizure and handling of evidence, and results of analyses conducted.

Provide Training

Develop and present training to federal, state and local law enforcement agencies in recognizing, legally collecting, evaluating and preserving computer evidence for trial.
